September General Meeting

September 26, 2015 @ 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM PDT

This month’s meeting features two very informative guest speakers: Dr. Sunita (“Sunny”) Cooke, President, MiraCosta College, and Vicki Chin from the San Diego Chapter of the Brady Campaign. These engaging speakers are just what DEMCCO needs to kick off the new meeting year. Don’t miss it!

Sunita CookeDr. Cooke, formerly president of Grossmont College, has been on the job at MiraCosta since January 2015. Born in Lucknow, India, Dr. Cooke immigrated to the United States with her family in 1968. After being awarded a doctorate in biology at Georgetown University, she completed a postdoctoral training program at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, in the molecular aspects of cell adhesion and metastasis. MiraCosta has 15,000 credit students and another 8,000 or so enrolled in non-credit courses. Dr. Cooke has a big job ahead of her. Given her stellar credentials, she’s up to the task. Look forward to meeting her next week.

We’re all familiar with the Brady Gun Control organization Ms. Chin represents. It is good to know that Brady is thriving in our County. Brady has announced the bold goal to cut the number of U.S. gun deaths in half by 2025, based on an innovative and exciting strategy that centers on the idea of keeping guns out of the wrong hands through three impact-driven, broadly engaging campaigns. The importance of this goal cannot be overstated. The U.S. leads the whole wide world in gun ownership. A CNN analysis shows U.S. gun owners own one-third of all guns on the planet, though representing less than 1% of total world population. The percentage of individual gun owners has declined dramatically in recent decades but those who do have them are stockpiling more firearms than ever. One in 10 American women now owns a gun. According to Reuter’s News Service, Over half of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States. To use a tasteless pun, is this not overkill? Instead of trillions for defense from foreign terrorists, maybe we should divert some of the trillions to keeping better control over our domestic arsenals. We’re armed to the teeth in this country, at least 38% of us are. You’d think we were in a war-torn nation in the Middle East. As the NRA likes to say, “guns keep us safe.” I guess NRA motto writers don’t read the same news publications I read.

Before the general meeting at 10-Pat McFarlane’s Political Action Cte. meets at 9 am.   Participation open to all members.  This Committee, more than most any other, represents what DEMCCO and other volunteer political groups are all about.  There is much to be done in this coming election cycle and Pat knows what to do.  Her contact info:  P.A.McFarlane2016@gmail.com 760-439-1481.

Speaking of the coming election cycle, note that two first-rate candidates are in the race and need our support.  Douglas Applegate has announced he will run for Congress against Darrell Issa.  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!  Doug.  Mr. Applegate is a seasoned trial lawyer with over twenty-eight years of experience, graduating Arizona State School of Law in 1979 (Magna Cum Laude)-after attending the Naval Justice School as an Honors Graduate. He is a retired Marine Corps Colonel, with 32 years active and reserve duty. http://applegateforcongress.com/.

DEMCCO member Eve Simmons is running for CA Assembly District 76, the one Rocky Chavez is vacating to run for Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat.  Given that climate change may well be the top issue worldwide, we need people like Eve representing us.  Ms. Simmons is an environmental advocate from the Cardiff Area of Encinitas.  She has lectured on Global Warming/Climate Change for decades and has worked toward action on these issues both locally and in Washington D.C.

Eve serves on San Diego County’s Fish and Wildlife Advisory Commission and is an elected delegate to CA 76th AD. She is an active member of Citizen’s Climate Lobby <https://citizensclimatelobby.org/> , 350.org <http://350.org/> , Sierra Club <http://sandiegosierraclub.org/> , and Greenpeace <http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/> .  She’s a Climate Reality Project <https://www.climaterealityproject.org/>  Leader, former board member of San Diego Energy District Foundation <http://www.sandiegoenergydistrict.org/>  and Encinitas EcoFest <http://www.ecofestencinitas.org/>

Follow Eve on her website www.evesimmons.com <http://www.evesimmons.com>  and blog TheGreenFlash.org. Also  Twitter@Eve_Simmons <https://twitter.com/eve_simmons> . It’s time local Democrats get proper representation in Sacramento and D.C. Our progressive/humane issues have been regularly ignored by the conservative Republicans who have hogged these seats for way too long.  With your and my commitment of energy and cash, 2016 will be the year that changes that.  Both candidates regularly come to our meetings/events.  Let’s all do what we can for their campaigns.  It’s vital and it’s what DEMCCO does so well. Please check the calendar for specific dates and/or changes.

The Political Action Subcommittee meets same day/location at 9:15 AM.  Members are encouraged to attend and bring guests! Ample Parking & Refreshments served plus a 50/50 raffle is held.
